Election Had Effect on Opium Production

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Afghanistan stated that the election period in 2014 had an adverse effect on drug eradication. The election pulled police and army units away from counter-drug activities. In addition, candidates running for office at the national and provincial levels sought money to run their campaigns from drug warlords.
