Afghan Ski Paradise

The mountainous province of Bamyan in central Afghanistan is the site of the beginnings of a ski paradise. During winter months this region sees lots of snow and there are plenty of slopes. Bamyan is one of the more peaceful provinces of Afghanistan. In addition the scenery is spectacular. Watch a five-minute long video by Deutsche Welle (Germany), April 23, 2105.

Afghanistan Ski Challenge

At an altitude of 11,000 feet the Afghanistan Ski Challenge is held once a year. It is somewhat austere in support and amenities and there is no ski lift. You have to ascend the mountain slope with your skis on your back in order to ski down. The ski challenge was started in 2010 and has grown to attract over 50 western competitors. There is also a "locals" race with homemade Afghan skis and a women's race held discreetly at a nearby location. Afghan Women Football

Afghan women have their own football league (it looks sorta like soccer to me). The women's league, called the Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF), recently held a tournament in Kabul. The four-team league is just starting out but holds some promise to grow in the future.The women wore black head-scarves and full leggings as part of their uniform.
